The litter box is a very important factor of the cat’s life. A litter box trained cat is welcomed at any place, any home. Litter training a cat at it’s early life stage will make him a great pet in time. But sometimes, no matter what you do, your cat refuses to use his litter box. It can be frustrating, right? Well, don’t worry. Here are some tips to make your cat litter box more appealing for the cat:

1.       Choose the correct type of cat litter: There are thousands of types of cat litter in the market now. You have to understand all of them are not suitable for every type of cats. You’ll have to choose the right one for your cat. Generally cats like a soft sandy litter to do their business. It is recommended that the sand is unscented. Children play sand is optimal for this purpose. Also, make sure that the sand is scoopable, otherwise it will  be very hard to clean the litter box. Texture is also very important to some choosy cats. Generally cats love a soft substrate which they can dig around. Some cats may find any scent on the substrate offensive.

2.       Keep the lid open: Many cat owners make the mistake of keeping the lid of the litter box close. It makes the litter box uncomfortable for the cat. Moreover, they can’t have access to the litter box all the time. The lids should be open all the time for ensuring maximum comfort. Another reason for this is your cat needs to see a full escape potential in the litter box. If he sees that there is hardly any way to escape from the litter box, it is very likely that he will avoid it.

3.       Keep the right amount of litter: Too little or too much both make problem in the litter box. When there is too little litter, your cat won’t be able to dig around. With too much litter, it will create a serious odor problem. So, go for three inches of litter. After scooping soiled litter, top it off to maintain the 3 inch height.

4.       Keep the litter box clean: If you clean your litter box once in a while, it is very unlikely that your cat will use that litter box. Cat’s don’t like to do their business in a dirty environment. So, keep your cat’s litter box clean. Scoop often. It will also keep the litter box hygienic and clean.

5.       Right size litter box: The last tip and the most important tip I’ll share in this article is to get the right size litter box for your cat. You can’t squeeze a large cat in a small litter box. On the contrary, a small cat won’t enter a large litter box for security issue. So, you’ll have to go for the correct size. The rule of thumb is get a litter box that is 1.5 times the length of your cats body.
