Cats can be very choosy about their litter boxes. A tiny thing may set them off from using their litter box. Is your cat refusing to use his litter box? Well, the cause may lie in the following problems:
Keeping your cat’s litter box up to the standard is a very important thing to do, unless you want to live in a house full of cat mess. Here are some suggestions that might help your cat to do their business inside the box:
Number of boxes:
The general rule of thumb is you have to have one litter box per cat in the house. But it is a good idea to keep one additional so that, they won’t find excuses to do their business outside of the box. You can’t designate each litter box for each cat. Your cats may use randomly. So, it is often normal that one cat not using a litter box because another one has used it.
To solve this problem, you’ll have to keep all the litter boxes extremely clean. It’s also a good idea to place the litter boxes throughout your house, not in one place.
Boxes with lid?
Many cat owners like covered litter boxes. They certainly have many upsides, such as they trap the bad odor, cats has more privacy, etc. But, it has downsides too. With a covered litter box, your cat may often forget to use it as ‘out of sight, out of mind’. Larger cats often can’t fit inside a covered litter box. Some cats also don’t find covered litter boxes appealing.
If your cat doesn’t like covered litter box, he won’t use it. There is nothing you can do. To find out what type of litter box your cat prefers, you may need to try out both types at first.
Self-automated litter boxes:
There are lots of new litter boxes out there in the market. Some of them are self-automated claiming they’ll automatically clean the litter box. Though these types of litter boxes make out life far easier, some cats like to stick with the more traditional type of litter boxes.
Pick the right litter:
There are many types of litters on the market. Some of the types are clay litter, scoop litter, crystal based litter, silica gel based litter as well as biodegradable litter.
Most of the cats like fine grained litters. Fine grained litters are soft and more comfortable. Scoop litters have much finer grain than clay type litters. They also help to keep down the odor.
As there are practically thousand types of litter, stick with the one that has finer grains and higher odor control. Once you’ve chosen a litter, stick with it. Constantly changing litter will confuse your cat and he may not use the litter box at all.
